Our Services

Slate roofing services we offer.

Natural and synthetic slate installed, repaired, and restored on historic and custom homes across the Carolinas. Most slate roofs need care long before they need replacing, and we will tell you which one yours needs.

  • Natural Slate Installation

Quarried slate hung with copper or stainless fasteners over the underlayment a hundred-year roof deserves.

  • Synthetic Slate Systems

Composite slate with the same profile at a fraction of the weight and cost, smart for re-roofs.

  • Slate Repair & Matching

Cracked and slipped slates replaced with stock matched to your roof, not whatever is on the truck.

  • Copper Flashing & Details

Valleys, chimneys, dormers, and ridges detailed in metals that last as long as the slate above them.

  • Slate Roof Restoration

Failed flashing, rusted nails, and old tar repairs undone so a sound slate roof gets decades more.

  • Historic Home Roofing

Steep pitches, turrets, and dormers on older homes, matched to the profile the street calls for.

"After getting nowhere with six other roofing companies (no-shows, ghosting), I tried Baker. Everyone was professional and always on time with great communication. Joey and his crew did excellent work and thoroughly cleaned up."

Slate Roofing

A slate roof is a generational roof.

Natural slate is quarried stone. Installed well, it can protect a home for a century or more and give it a look nothing else matches. That is why it sits on so many of the Carolinas' historic homes, and why it is worth caring for rather than replacing.

It is also unforgiving. Slate has to be hung with the right fasteners, flashed in copper or other long-life metal, and walked by people who know where to step. A shingle crew can do real damage to a slate roof in an afternoon. Our crews work slate regularly, and a senior member of our team reviews every slate project before we quote it.

Honest Assessment

Slate roof repair, restoration, or replacement?

Most companies sell you a roof. We will tell you if you need one. On a slate roof the answer is usually a repair. These are the things we check.

  • Cracked or slipped slates

A repair. We replace individual slates with matched stock and secure them so they stay put.

  • Failed flashing

Valleys, chimneys, and dormers leak first. Renewing the flashing, ideally in copper, fixes most slate leaks.

  • Rusted nails

When the nails fail, slates slide. If it is widespread, the roof may need to be re-hung.

  • Old tar and caulk repairs

Past patches trap water and hide damage. We take them out and repair the slate properly.

  • Delaminating slate

Slate that is flaking or crumbling across the roof has reached the end of its life. That is when replacement makes sense.

  • Soft decking

Long-term leaks can rot the deck under the slate. We find it and fix it while the slate is lifted.

If a repair can buy your slate roof more decades, we will tell you. If the roof is done, we will show you why with photos from your own roof.

Slate Options

Natural vs. synthetic slate.

Both give a home the look of a slate roof. The difference is weight, cost, and how long the roof lasts.

Natural slate

What it is
Quarried stone, split by hand, in colors that vary by quarry.
Typical lifespan
75 to 100 years or more
Weight
Heavy. The structure must be framed for it.
Best for
Historic homes that already carry slate, and builds meant to last generations.
Repairs later
Individual slates replace cleanly with matched stock.

Synthetic slate

What it is
A composite molded from real slate, made to match its profile and color.
Typical lifespan
Several decades
Weight
Light. Most homes can carry it without reinforcement.
Best for
Re-roofing to a slate look on a home not built for natural slate.
Repairs later
Individual pieces replace cleanly, and resist cracking underfoot.
Copper Details

Copper flashing that lasts as long as the slate.

A slate roof is only as good as the metal around it. Valleys, chimneys, dormers, and ridges are where water gets in, and a hundred-year roof should not be flashed with metal that fails in twenty.

We detail slate roofs in copper and other long-life metals, matched to the age and style of the house.

  • Copper valleys

Open copper valleys that carry water off the roof and age to a natural patina.

  • Step and counter flashing

At chimneys and dormer walls, layered so water cannot run behind the slate.

  • Copper gutters

Half-round copper gutters and downspouts finished to match the roof.

  • Snow guards and ridges

Details that keep slate and ice where they belong.

Slate Roof Cost

What goes into the cost of a slate roof.

Slate is the most expensive common roof to install and one of the least expensive to own, because it lasts so long. Repairs and restoration cost far less than replacement, and we will always price that option first when the roof can be saved. These are the things that move the number.

  • Natural or synthetic

Quarried slate costs more and weighs more. Synthetic slate is lighter and less expensive.

  • Repair, restore, or replace

Replacing slates and flashing costs a fraction of a new roof.

  • Copper and metalwork

How many valleys, chimneys, dormers, and gutters need copper.

  • Structure

Whether the framing can carry natural slate, or needs reinforcement first.

  • Roof size and pitch

Slate roofs tend to be steep, which adds staging and labor.

  • Matching

Finding slate that matches an older roof, sometimes from salvaged stock.

Exceptional job on window, siding and gutter replacement. Everything was literally measured twice and arrived the proper size. No surprises once work started, and the job site was kept clean with daily end-of-day sweeps.

We were told by someone else that we needed an entirely new roof. Will gave us the honest news that we only had a few shingles and pipe boots to replace. His honesty and quick scheduling saved us so much stress (and money).

FAQ

Common slate roofing questions from Carolina homeowners

How long does a slate roof last?+

Natural slate commonly lasts 75 to 100 years or more, and synthetic slate several decades. The slate itself usually outlives the nails, flashing, and underlayment around it, which is where most slate repairs come from.

Can you repair my slate roof instead of replacing it?+

Usually, yes. Many slate roofs only need cracked or slipped slates replaced and the flashing renewed. We match the slate so the repair disappears into the roof, and we tell you honestly how much life the roof has left. Replacement makes sense when the slate itself is delaminating across the roof or the nails have failed everywhere.

Natural or synthetic slate: which should I choose?+

Natural slate is the longest-lived roof you can buy and the right choice on a historic home that already carries it. Synthetic slate gives the same profile at a fraction of the weight and cost, which makes it a strong re-roof option on a house not framed for natural slate. We bring samples of both.

Can you match the slate on my older home?+

In most cases. Slate varies by quarry, color, and thickness, so we match replacement slate to what is on your roof, from salvaged stock when that is the closest match, rather than using whatever is on the truck.

Why do slate roofs leak?+

Most leaks on a slate roof come from failed flashing at valleys, chimneys, and dormers, from rusted nails letting slates slip, or from old tar and caulk repairs. The slate itself is rarely the problem. Fixing those details can add decades to the roof.

How much does a slate roof cost?+

It depends on natural versus synthetic slate, the size and pitch of the roof, how much copper flashing it needs, and whether the structure can carry natural slate. Repairs and restoration cost far less than replacement. After we inspect, you get a written, itemized proposal before any work starts.

Do you install slate roofs across both Carolinas?+

Yes, across our North Carolina and South Carolina markets. Slate is specialty work, so a senior member of our team reviews every slate project before we quote it. Share your address and we will set up a consultation.
