The company, initially called Baker Rawls Tin Shop, was founded in 1915 by W. P. Baker in downtown Raleigh. From the very beginning, his promise was simple: to always do good work. Mr. Baker hung a sign in his shop that read, “We shall do good work, at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always good work.” That phrase became more than a motto. It became a way of doing business that shaped the company’s reputation in Raleigh and across North Carolina.

In those early years, Mr. Baker built trust one project at a time. Customers came to rely on Baker not only for quality work but also for the honesty and respect that guided every interaction.

Always Good Work

The phrase “Always Good Work” has been handed down through three generations of family ownership. It is a mission statement that has kept Baker focused through wars, economic changes, and a century of growth in Raleigh. The words remind us that no matter how large the company becomes, every home and every project deserves the highest level of care.

Today, that same standard continues at Baker Home Exteriors. When we install a roof, replace siding, or repair gutters, we carry forward a tradition that started with W. P. Baker himself.

Still Family-Owned After 110 Years

Family ownership has been central to Baker’s story. W. P. Baker’s grandsons, Prentiss and Frank Baker, are now the third generation of leadership at the company.

One of their guiding principles has been that longevity doesn’t come from shortcuts but from values. As Frank Baker shared in an interview, survival through more than 100 years of change comes down to a simple truth: put people first, do good work, and treat employees and customers like family.

Growing With the Community

As Raleigh has expanded, so has Baker Home Exteriors. What began as a small tin shop has grown into a comprehensive exterior services provider. Today we proudly offer:

Looking Ahead

The family that owns the business is also growing, expanding to include all Baker employees.

In the summer of 2025, Baker announced that the company would become fully employee owned, meaning that every one of our employees now has a stake in the company. This was done to reward the people who helped build the best roofing company in the Carolinas. But also to ensure 100 more years of attention to detail, care, and commitment to what matters for our customers.

Raleigh is growing faster than ever, and we are excited to keep growing with it while staying true to the promise of “Always Good Work.”
